How To Transition Your Space From Summer to Fall With These Simple Design Tips

The transition into a new season can be exciting, especially when that season includes hearty foods, pumpkin spice, and warm decor tones

Ann-Marie has rounded up her favourite (and easy!) ways to transition your space from summer to fall and get you excited for the cozy evenings ahead.

Include Natural Elements

Balance fall tones by incorporating festive decor in neutral colours. Think of adding pinecones, leaves, branches, acorns, and white pumpkins. Natural elements bring in the right amount of fall while remaining easy on the wallet and not overwhelming your space with oranges, reds, and yellows. White and tan are fantastic colour choices.

Ann-Marie's Tip: Fill a large bowl with miniature white pumpkins, sprigs, dried leaves, and other gathered finds to create a beautiful centerpiece that whispers fall.

Add Some Runners

Warming up a space can sometimes literally mean warming it up. Create a comforting place for your feet by adding runners to your kitchen and hallways, choosing those with natural tones or deeper colours to give it the fall effect.

Ann-Marie's Tip: Choose a rug company, like Ruggable, where you can switch out the design of the rug season after season without having to invest in a new underlay.

Swap Out Pillows

Possibly the easiest way to make your decor feel seasonally fresh, swapping out pillows for those more seasonally appropriate gives your space a quick makeover. Choose pillows with thick weaves, plaid patterns, or warm tones for fall.

Ann-Marie's Tip: If you're tight on storage space, change your pillow covers versus having to store entire pillows!

Add Extra Layers to Your Bed

Just as blankets add depth to a sofa or chair, they can have the same effect on a bed. Create a cozy oasis in the bedroom by adding throw blankets to your bedding and swapping out the duvet cover. Thicker bedding layers warm you up on cold nights and mornings, and the ultra plushness appears homey.

Ann-Marie's Tip: Choose bouclé, fake fur, and heavy linens for amazing fall bedroom vibes.

Incorporate Matte Finishes

Reflect on the seasonal weather inside the home with decor that's less cheery and bright. This means choosing decor items with matte finishes, like black vases or planters. Combined with ceramic bowls and marble bookends, you'll have a beautiful shelf.

Ann-Marie's Tip: If you have a mantle in your space, this is a key area to add seasonal styling options

Add A Wreath To Your Front Door

Welcome your guests with a beautiful fall wreath. If you don't want something too bright and colourful, go back to our tip about designing with natural elements, and choose pampas grass, dried eucalyptus, or branches to create the perfect fall entrance.

Ann-Marie's Tip: If you can't find these items to make a wreath yourself, many options are available in stores with fake leaves and dried elements that look real and can be used every year.
