How To Incorporate Softened Kitchen Furnishings

Many of us tend to experiment with styling in places like living rooms and bedrooms, but have you thought about your kitchen?

We love to create little moments that catch the eye, and the kitchen is a great place to do so. Adding unexpected softened furnishings allows your kitchen to flow seamlessly with the rest of your home, especially as designs become more and more open concept.

Add a runner

Adding a runner to your kitchen is probably the most impactful way you can soften the space. While it’s valid to have a little fear of bringing a rug into a space that often results in spills and messes, there are so many spill-resistant indoor and outdoor rugs that allow for great durability and easy washing in a kitchen space. Ruggable has a ton of reasonably priced runners that are designed to be thrown in the washing machine.

Lamps in the kitchen

Yes, lamps. Adding a lamp into a kitchen can create an instantly cozy and ambient feeling. You don’t need to play it safe here. Lamps are unexpected kitchen furnishings, which gives you the room to really play around with shape and colour. Create a little vignette by adding some more traditional kitchen items around the lamp, such as cookbooks or a utensil holder, easily pulling everything together.

Not enough space for a lamp? Swap out the metal or glass shade on your kitchen light or pendants for a fabric or woven basket to add that softened touch.

Display your favourite books

Okay, so you probably already have a few cookbooks somewhere in your kitchen, but are they hidden in a cupboard? Bring them out, along with some of your favourite coffee table books and thick, beautiful novels, and try incorporating them into your kitchen design.

Stack them vertically or horizontally in an empty corner of your counter, under a beautiful bowl on your open shelving, or in the dead space above your kitchen cabinets.

A dose of greenery

Plants really make living room spaces feel inviting, so why not incorporate them into your kitchen? A little herb garden in the window sill, pothos trailing down from the tops of your kitchen cabinets, open shelving lined with adorable potted plants, any way you can find a corner for a plant is a good place to add some life.

If your kitchen isn’t blessed with lots of natural light, don’t worry! Plants such as pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants, and peperomias are all very tolerant of low-light spaces.

Light some candles

Bring those dining room candles into the kitchen and create an instant warm ambiance. Even when not lit, just the presence of unique candle holders, such as colourful glass or vintage brass, add a softness to the harsh finishings of a kitchen. Allow your personality to show and choose candles with scents you love and holders that have a story behind them.
