How To Prepare Your Home for Guests in 4 Easy Steps

Does hosting family for the holidays spark anxiety? It doesn’t have to. With our few simple suggestions, you can have your home ready for guests this season, or any time of year.

Make Bedtime Simple

The biggest strain when hosting guests? Where to put them. Not everyone has the convenience of designated guest rooms, which is why maximizing the space you do have is so important.

Custom-built murphy beds and bunk beds allow you to have extra beds on hand, without having to sacrifice an entire room. These beds can be designed to flow with the other elements of your room so that when not in use, they essentially disappear into the background.

Heronwood Tip: Pull out a room divider and place it around the bed to create a private space for your guests.

Drink Station 101

What often makes you feel most at home? It’s probably sipping on your favourite drink. Whether sparkling water, warm black tea, or a glass of red wine, having a dedicated drink station in your kitchen where your guests can prepare their own drinks allows them to feel comfortable in your space.

Heronwood Tip: Offer up a variety of things, switching up the station from morning coffee to afternoon tea and evening cocktails to keep your guests happy throughout the day.

Laundry Made Effortless

While an expertly designed laundry room is what really makes laundry day effortless (and possibly even enjoyable), it doesn’t hurt to set yourself up for some success from the getgo. Where each guest is staying, include a small laundry basket. That way, collecting everyone’s things come laundry day is a little easier, and your guests will love the added touch of keeping their little guest corner tidy.

Heronwood Tip: Choose laundry baskets that blend well with your decor, especially if your guests are staying in the living room. Weaved baskets are our current go-to!

Create a Welcome Basket

Staying chez vous just got a whole lot nicer when your guests are greeted with a little welcome basket. Offering up your guests the items they’ll need to be comfortable during their stay will help make them feel at ease and adds a wonderful personal touch. Some of what we love including in our baskets are:

  • Guest towels

  • A cozy throw

  • Warm slippers

  • Your favourite book for them to borrow

  • A comforting and linen spray

  • Phone charger

  • Sleep mask

  • Extra toothbrush and toothpaste

Heronwood Tip: Personalize the basket to whoever your guest is and include a favourite treat of theirs.
